What’s a Phytonutrient? And why should you care?

We all know (or have heard) about how we should eat ‘five a day’, but do we know why it really matters how much fruit and veg we eat?  Food is food, right? Wrong …

Fruit and veg, spices and herbs come in a myriad different colours, shapes, textures and flavours and are jam-packed with chemicals that serve to give them all these wonderful characteristics as well as protecting them from pests and environmental stressors.  All the wonderful smells, colours and tastes of plant foods also impart protective benefits to us.

‘Phyto’ comes from Greek and means ‘of plants’, so phytonutrients are simply the thousands upon thousands of nutrients that are found in plant foods.  They have many different names – flavenoids, phenols, tannins, indoles, lignans, terpenoids, alkaloids, phenylpropenoids, glycosides, flavones,  ellargic acid – the list goes on.  But all you need to know is that they are all good for you, and although nobody knows exactly how they do it, they work in harmony to protect us.
