What is a Health Coach?
A Health Coach is someone who has been trained in hundreds of diet and nutrition theories, has a deep understanding of how all the bodily systems work together and takes an holistic approach to helping you reach your own health and wellness goals.
Health Coaches work alongside and in conjunction with other Health Care professionals. The expertise of the Health Coach lies in providing you with the tools, protocols, systems and approaches necessary to incorporate positive lifestyle choices into your life.
A Health Coach will see you as a complete and unique person and work with you to de-code the messages your body is sending you AND manage the interplay of work, home, stress and wellness goals to bring about the changes that you want in your life.
How does Health Coaching work?
Health Coaching is the best way for you to identify and commit to the lifestyle that works best for your body. It works by providing a safe and confidential framework in which you can unwind the issues that have been contributing to your weight gain or ill-health and then build new lifestyle patterns that will serve you well into the future.
Within a Health Coaching programme you will be given the support, encouragement and information you need and also, importantly, held to account for the commitments you make on your journey to well being.
There are always moments of discouragement in any attempt to define and reach new goals and this is when having a Health Coach really comes into its own. When things are not going along as smoothly as you had hoped, that’s when you need someone by your side to provide not only encouragement and support, but also knowledge and understanding of what you are going through and what you could best do to feel better.
Who would benefit from Health Coaching
Health Coaching is for everyone who wants to make positive changes in their lives.
You may want to be a little thinner, you may need to understand why you can no longer tolerate gluten or dairy, you may be struggling with poor sleep, joint pain or bloating and want to get to the bottom of the root causes of these things.
Or you may jut want to feel as well and healthy as you possibly can.
Most of us know what we should be doing – eating more vegetables, getting more exercise – but it is not always that easy to do it. If it were easy, everyone would be in peak condition and feeling great about themselves 24/7.
Sometimes we need support to get good habits into our lives and if you have a heath or wellness goal in mind, then a Health Coach will help you achieve it.
What is the difference between a Health Coach and a Nutritionist?
A Healthcoach provides the ‘How’ to everyone else’s ‘What’.
Health Coaches often work alongside nutritionists, or other healthcare professionals to help you implement the protocols they recommend.
While a nutritionist is expert on the macro and micro nutrients needed to deal with debilitating disease and will provide a list of foods to eat and not to eat, it is not always easy to incorporate these changes in our lives.
A Health Coach, on the other hand, is trained in how to listen to your needs and work with you to make those positive lifestyle choices.
A Health Coach works on the basis that each of us is unique and whilst most of us know instinctively what we should be doing and eating, it is difficult to get these things into our lives. Let’s face it,if it were easy, we would all be slim and healthy!
A Health Coach will work with you to discover what works best for your individual body and your life and then help you build new lifestyle habits so you can fold in small incremental changes in the most positive way to generate the best possible outcome for you.
A Health Coach will take things at your speed and give you time to assimilate one new idea into your life, before introducing a new one. We can move you along the road to your success as quickly or as slowly as you want to go.
What a Health Coach won’t do is give you a whole list of things to do and not do and then give you a hard time when you feel overwhelmed or discouraged.
What is the Health Coaching process?
After an initial Health History consultation, you will meet with your Health Coach every fortnight (ie two times a month) either in person, phone, or skype. During your sessions you will discuss your goals and priorities and be able to ask questions and obtain advice. Action steps and commitments will be agreed for the next two weeks. It is best to commit to a programme of six months as this is the period it takes to fully understand your body’s requirements and establish the new habits necessary to meet those requirements.
How long does it take?
Each session will last for approximately 50 minutes. The recommended duration for a programme of Health Coaching is six months as this is the time it takes to understand your body’s requirements and establish new habits to meet them. But it is possible to extend that period if you wish, or to opt for shorter programmes if that suits your objectives better. How much does Health Coaching cost?
The average cost for Health Coaching is £140 a month, ie £70 a session. But there are some discounts available if buying a six month programme. Please refer to the Health Coaching products for more details of the specific programmes and pricing structures available.
How do I pay?
Payment is made in advance through the Prüv site via PayPal. Although there is a mechanism for paying for one session at a time, there are significant discounts for those paying up front for their full programme. The reason for this is simple: I want you to be successful and I know that success comes with commitment and accountability and these are created best within a programme of sessions rather than a one-off.
What happens if I am late or cannot make a session?
When you sign up for your Health Coaching programme you will be asked to sign a contract, committing to attending all the sessions in the programme. The reason we do this is that there will, in all likelihood, be ups and downs along the way and it is usually the times when you feel least like attending that you will get the most benefit.
Of course there are times when a missed appointment is unavoidable and in this case 24 hours notice of cancellation is required, in which case we can re-schedule your session for another time.
I want you to be successful and success comes with commitment. In addition I have made commitments to other clients, so out of respect for your goals and those of all my clients, it is not possible to re-schedule appointments with less than 24 hours notice.
How will I get the most out of my Health Coaching Sessions?
All that you need to do is show up and be prepared to make small sustainable changes to your routines! This is all about you and what you want to achieve. You will commit to attend all the sessions in your programme, to implement the recommendations and then discuss how they felt for you.
What can I expect during the course of the programme?
We are not looking for instant results here, but sustainable, long-term change for the better. What I am hoping for you is that through the programme you will discover what you need to do to change your health once and for all.
Everyone is unique and what works for one person will not necessarily work for another. To begin with we will start to de-code the messages your body is sending to work out what it best needs. We will try a number of different protocols to find what you feel most comfortable with and what works best for your body. Once we have established a clear road-map (usually two or three sessions) we will then move on to build in a number of small, incremental changes that will have a profound effect on your health and wellbeing. Once we have started to re-balance and re-calibrate your systems, the weight and health issues will melt away.
Can you explain the thinking behind Primary Food and Secondary Food?
This is a concept that is unique to the Institute of Integrative Nutrition.
As an IIN accredited Health Coach, I believe that we are nourished by many things, not just the food we eat. Primary Food refers to all those things, other than food and drink, which nourish us – our relationships, our work, our creative outlet – and Secondary Food is what we eat and drink.
For me to bang on about broccoli when you are going through a bad time at work or in a relationship would be counter-productive. So, as a Health Coach I can shine a light on how Primary Food issues are helping or hindering your attempts to optimise your Secondary Food and provide a safe space for you to connect the dots and work out how to take the best care of yourself from all angles.
